It was so refreshing to visit the “home canyon” yesterday and photograph the wildflowers after many years of not making the short journey from Ahwahnee to see the bloom. Having lived in the Merced River Canyon for twenty years (1980-2000), it was like visiting an old friend. I worked early in the day to avoid the crowds and catch some textured lighting at a favorite local that I hadn’t photographed in a couple of decades! Rather than try to capture the glaring orange hillsides of open poppies, I prefer the subtlties of soft even light or the textures of the first rays of morning light.

In this image, the poppies are not open yet their colors provide a powerful impact to the “pointelism” of this field.
