I am finally pulling together my favorite photographs from 2012. It is always helpful to take the occasional assessment of our own creative progress. The annual ritual of posting a “best of” has gone viral. You might be interested in reading an essay I wrote on the subject several years ago in my On Landscape column for Outdoor Photographer on this subject. I am pleased with the selection, which includes new Impressions of Light images, iPhone images, studio macro setups as well as landscapes taken around my home and in nearby Yosemite. Since I started teaching private workshop sessions in Yosemite, I’ve been visiting Yosemite Valley much more often so you will see a batch of new Yosemite images taken this past fall and winter.
This year I have numbered each image, which will make it easier for your to let me know which ones are your favorites. It will be fun and helpful for me to have your feedback. I will value a list of favs, or general thoughts on what work you respond to the most. After I assess your feedback, I will then make a final edit of 10-15 that are my top selects of the year. If you have your own list of top images for 2012, please add your link in your comments below.
Regarding my private Yosemite sessions, you might enjoy seeing the Flickr group that I started for my students to share their photographs with each other: William Neill Private Yosemite Workshops.
I look forward to your comments and favorites for my 2012 portfolio.
Happy New Year, Bill

Hi John,
Thanks for joining in. I think that you are the only one who picked #10!
#16 in definitely in my top ten!
Folks, go see John’s work: http://www.johnoconnorphoto.com/
Workshop pics are welcome anytime. John helps me sometimes in my Yosemite private workshops, and is an excellent photog and teacher.
January 22, 2013 at 9:00 PM
“number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9”
…But really, #10, #16 & #11. In that order.
10 as it’s unexpected. I love the various repeating shapes and quality of light. I’ve always enjoyed seeing you apply your eye for design to subjects outside the ‘nature’ genre.
16 again for design and quality of light. The rhythm is fantastic and the texture is consuming.
11 LIGHT! MOOD! ZEN!
The rest are good…as always…these are my favorite. I owe you some workshop pics!
Peace.

Also hi to Nancy. Thanks for sharing your 2012 link!

Hi Kevin,
You have a fine collection at your link http://livingwilderness.blogspot.com/2013/01/best-images-of-2012.html. I’ve got to say that the Crater Lake stars really lights me up. Congrats on your efforts!

Thanks again all! Good to hear from you Matthias, and see your 2012 portfolio! Well done. The fall vineyard is my fav!
Do you know Frank Grisdale’s photography? http://www.frankgrisdale.com/
January 22, 2013 at 3:20 PM
Inspiring, exhilarating, and motivational. That’s what I found in your favorite images, Bill. Narrowing this selection at all is indeed challenging. My personal selection all caused me to linger awhile. 1, 2, 4, 12, 19, 21, and 25 each offered a sense of mystery and yet at the same time were calming. That said I liked 15, 16, 22 and 27 because of their sharp textured detail and perceived depth.
You set the bar pretty high, Mr. Neill.
January 21, 2013 at 2:51 PM
Hi Bill,
I had the pleasure of attending one of your online courses remotely from Germany a few years ago – which established a sound foundation for my own portfolio development. Thanks again for your input then!
In addition, I am keen to follow your ongoing work and watch how it develops over time – it’s so often inspiring.
Well, here is my list of favorites, just the top 6 to keep it digestible (no ranking implied by the order) …:
1 – 5 – 11 – 19 – 29 – 34
I like your point of wrapping up a year of activity & development by a retrospect, hence I took up your idea and compiled my top 20 pictures from 2012.
You can find them following the link below (N.B. even if “Gestische” Photography is often challenged – I value it as an additional, important approach for my photographic expression and hence it constitutes quite a significant part of my work):

Cheers, Matthias
January 20, 2013 at 5:54 PM
Thanks for your sharing, and it is really difficult to choose the favorite one among these beautiful and creative pictures. Nonetheless, #5 is the one I like most, because the reflection sets off the flowers beautifully with softly contrastive colors.
January 20, 2013 at 4:47 PM
Hi, Bill. Actually, I’m here looking at your picks as a diversion….I’m finding it so hard to whittle down my own 2012 picks, I figured I’d come over and look at yours. I’ve still got 68 at the moment and getting nowhere fast.
So, after a quick look, I’m going to go with:
1, 11, 16, 19, 21, 26, 29, 31, 34, 36
January 20, 2013 at 12:55 PM
Thanks everyone for all the great feedback. It will take me days to go through all of your “votes!” I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of your replies. It reminds me that I did have a successful year. It is not easy to keep pushing myself creatively through several decades of photographic effort!
January 20, 2013 at 12:01 PM
I like 1,7,10,12,19,27,28,29,31,and 33. i find it so interesting how we all choose different favorites. i am just a beginner but here are my favorites from 2012 for those with google+. ( i hope this link works; like I said: beginner.)

Of your “Impressions of Light” images, #1 is my favorite. There is just something special about the lines, motion and color in that one. Number 19, the Gulls at Natural Bridges, is probably my favorite of your 2012 work overall. It’s a gorgeous image, and the birds’ long shadows really make it a wow image for me. My other favorite are 6, 13, and 16.
My “best of 2012” is located here:

January 20, 2013 at 7:38 AM
Bill,
All great images (still not keen on those “Impressions of Light” images). 16 is my favorite of the portfolio.
January 20, 2013 at 3:59 AM
Wonderful images and you set a difficult challenge
2,11 are my favourite coastal images – they have wonderful light
4,29,32,36 and 38 are my pick of the Yosemite images. I’d love to see the misty oaks of 32 printed large.
1,5 and 21 woul make up my top ten.
They might be a bit safe 19 could squeeze out something as its a little different
Have an equally good 2013
January 20, 2013 at 2:08 AM
William – these are all tremendous, notable images. My first choice would be the beautiful No.2 (Sandpiper at Sunrise). Following on from this achievement I would select Nos. 4, 16 and 20. Really great work.
Congratulations on a great year’s work.
January 19, 2013 at 9:12 PM
Stunning collection, making it hard to choose. Here are my top ten: 1, 4, 5, 15, 19, 22, 27, 29, 34, 38. Thanks for sharing all of them.
January 19, 2013 at 5:00 PM
Bill, As usual, your 2012 picks are great. It is like trying to pick a favorite child out of a family of 38. My favorites are #1,5,9,and 16. I look forward to your bulletin eaach month.
January 19, 2013 at 2:19 PM
I like most of them, but the ones that resonate most for me are 1, 4, 5, 22, 34, and 38.
January 19, 2013 at 9:08 AM
I like number 38 the best
January 19, 2013 at 8:47 AM
My favorites (in no particular order): 1, 4, 6, 7, 16, 28, 29, 32, 37. They all struck an emotional chord with me. Of these #4 is my most favorite.
All of the photos show great vision and technical skill.
As always your work is wonderful.
Allen
January 19, 2013 at 8:36 AM
My favorites are #3, #4, #16, and #31. Runners up are #6, #8, #9, #23, and #38. I always enjoy seeing your work.
January 19, 2013 at 8:07 AM
My favorite is #27 because of the warm reflection on the blurred surface of the cold stream. The composition is great!
January 19, 2013 at 5:55 AM
My favourites.
#2. Sandpiper. I like the soft pastel colours and the several levels of colour.
#4. Poppies and Lupine. Love the impressionistic interpretation. It is so much better than a sharp image would be.
5. Redbud. The purple and yellow against the silky water create a wonderful composition.
15. Ferns. I must admit I am a great fan of fern shots.I did a few using a pantyhose filter over the lens. It creates a much softer and somewhat silky image.
16. Elderberry leaves. A very sharp image. The muted colours are different that you would expect from a photograph of leaves. It makes it unique.
17. Pine and Clouds. A unique composition that catches your attention right away.
20. Yellow Maple leaves. The very few leaves against a darker background shows the end of season well. Only a few leaves makes it more interesting and striking than if the tree was nearly full.
22. Oak and Pine. Great lighting. I like the juxtaposition of a deciduous and conifer.
27. Merced River. Wonderful composition with the green weeds in the foreground, the grey rocks and the light on the water.
January 19, 2013 at 5:17 AM
Bill,
this was a difficult task as all of the images are stunning in their own right. But here are my personal favorites.
Number 3, 4, 26, 29, and 38 are my top five selections. I love them all equally.
Rounding out the top ten are 5, 9, 27, 34, 36.
Fantastic year!
January 19, 2013 at 3:36 AM
Oh….is very difficult choose one….So: number 1 and number 38…the sun and the moon…simply , great. Compliments.
January 19, 2013 at 2:46 AM
Excellent collection of images, I’ve enjoyed your images and writing for years in Outdoor Photographer.
My favorites are #5, because I love the contrast between the vibrant color and sharpness of the redbud versus the softer color and movement of the background. Either of them alone would be a good image, but combined together it makes a great image.
I also like images 22 and 23 for similar reasons…I am drawn to the contrast of the brightness in the leaves versus the darkness of the background. I am fond of backlit trees because of the vibrancy in the leaves, too.
I like #27. It has the classic elements in foreground, middle, and background. I love the bright color reflected in the water, the softness of the long exposure in the moving water, the sharpness of the dark rocks in stark contrast to the color and water. Good image.
Image #28, great color, great contrast between the colors. I love the off-centered horizon with the emphasis more on the reflection. All are strong elements that snap.
Image #29, another great reflection with great color contrast. Use of foreground, middle and background. Off center horizon. I love the softness of the color and grass on the shoreline in the middle versus the brightness of the trees and the reflection in the water.
Image #33 has an Oriental feel, like a Japanese painting where the strength is the subtlety.
Image #34 is grand, majestic, breathtaking…all the things a mountain scene should be. Love the high-def look. Love the monochromatic feel.
Image #37 makes me think of Galen Rowell. Love the contrast between the colder, monochrome blues versus the warmth of the setting sunlight reflected in the mountains.
Again, all are great images that I would have been ecstatic to have had the vision and opportunity to create.
January 19, 2013 at 2:28 AM

I tried my best to choose 12 images, but the best I did was 14 of them, just a wonderful selection of images to select from. The #s were as 2,3,6,7,10,15,16,19,21,25,28,35,36,38.
Well I hope that helps out a bit William, and thanks for sharing your work.
Sincerely Jesus
January 18, 2013 at 8:41 PM
You saved the best one for last! #38 is the show stopper as
the tone on Clouds Rest is amazing! I hope you stayed up all night after that!!!
I also enjoyed 34, 33, 28, 26 & 20 to keep it to a half dozen!
January 18, 2013 at 8:23 PM
Great images. Among my favorites are 11 and 12. They remind me of painting from my favorite painter, Nicolas de Stael. Other beautiful images are of course 34, and then 4,5,18,28 and 38.
Best wishes for a wonderful 2013
Guy
January 18, 2013 at 7:41 PM
Hi Bill, Found the collection fascinating. When push comes to shove, however, I narrowed my top 10 or 11 to 2, 27, 28, 33, 36, 37, 38 and 17, 18, 22, and 23. Cheers, Shirley
January 18, 2013 at 7:09 PM
Wonderful images Bill!
Hard time choosing the best.
Makes me think of your workshop out of Bishop so long ago.
You opened my eyes to the beauty of the Sierras.
Please let us know which ones you decided on Bill.
8,9,20, 22 = my favorite, 27,28, 29,33, 36
.
January 18, 2013 at 6:43 PM
Bill:
No surprise to find a wonderful collection of beautiful and imaginative photographs in your favorites list. If I were to list all that I like, the easiest thing would be to just include them all. I think you know that I’m a fan of your camera-motion photographs – I generally am not a fan of that sort of thing, but I find your examples beautiful and compelling. (I think about them often as I do my own experiments with camera motion blur.)
In any case, rather than offering up a long list, I decided to just mention a few favorites that caught my attention for various reasons:
6. Lillies
10. Elderberry leaves
28. Oak Reflections
31. Oak Forest in Fog
Best wishes for wonderful vision in 2013!
Dan

What a treat to look at this collection of images! Thank you for sharing. There are so many that I love, but these in particular:
#1 – I love the soft abstraction of this sunrise. The subtle echoes of color and soft diagonal lines add a lot to the overall effect.
#5 – a nice composition and a great ‘environmental portrait’ capturing a fleeting moment – the full flush of redbud blossoms plus the very beginning of leafing-out.
#16 – these elderberry leaves have wonderful texture and colors, and the composition is very pleasing. Great sharpness!
#34 – the shape, the texture, the lines just draw me in to this scene. the blue cast and the soft colors in the sky add a great mood.
January 18, 2013 at 5:50 PM
My responce is as follows, but certainly hard to chose. #’2-5-6-8-22-27-28-29-20-34-19-18-16-11-14-9>>>>>>>>>>> Thanks so much for your expertice –RON
January 18, 2013 at 5:47 PM
Hi Bill, Nice work.
My favorites, in no particular order are.
1 – beach sunset abstract
2 – sandpiper
3 – oak sunbeams
6 – water lillies
7 – nautilus
36 – ice patterns
38 – winter moonrise
January 18, 2013 at 5:46 PM
Thanks William Neill for all the beautiful pictures. My favorites are many. I hope that is okay.
#2 Sandpiper at Sunrise. I like all the blues with the highlights of yellow.
#4 Poppies and Lupine. This reminds me of an impressionist painting.
#5 Redbud. Simply beautiful.
#9 Stones. Love the color. I like rocks!
#11 Sunbeams and Fog. Days like this are interesting to photograph.
#13 Rock Formations. Reminds me of similar or the same type of rock formations at Salt Point State Park.
#16 Elderberry Leaves. Love the colors & texture.
#18 Half Dome at Sunrise. Beautiful picture of Half Dome. I love Yosemite which makes it difficult to not like every picture taken there.
#19 Gulls at Sunrise. This is a favorite because it is a different view of the coast.
#27 Merced River. Creative composition.
#29 Oak Reflections. Lovely
#32 Oak & Fog. Fog creates such wonderful picture opportunities. Especially when the right person is behind the camera.
#34 Winter Sunrise over Yosemite Valley. Beautiful. I love that view with all the colors in the photograph.
#36 Ice Patterns. Very interesting, creative.
#37 Winter Sunset on Half Dome. There is nothing in this picture to dislike.
#38 Winter Moonrise over Half Dome. This might be my favorite.
Tough decision to pick these! I’m strictly an amateur but I hope this helps as you narrow down the selections.
January 18, 2013 at 5:38 PM
Wow Bill. You do make it difficult. Here’s my fave top five:
1) #38 has all the elements that speak to me of mood and emotion in an image. (Multiple exposures, yes??)
2) #29 the tonal contrasts in this one are exquisite.
3) #23 I’m a sucker for backlit leaves. Heaven knows I shoot enough of them. But the arrangement of the leaves are something else. In this one, the leaves are arranged like a symphony.
4) #16 great pattern, arrangement and earthtones.
5) #12 reminds me of a dream I once had.
Can’t wait to see 2013 collection!
January 18, 2013 at 5:33 PM
My favorites are 4, 6, 22, 37. Love all the images.
January 18, 2013 at 5:28 PM
Bill, this is a nearly impossible task. Pick the best out of all these masterpieces? I had to keep going back to shorten the list. OK:
2 – Sandpiper
5 – Redbud
16 – Elderberry Leaves
19 – Gulls
22 – Oak and Pine
23 – Backlit Black Oaks
34 – Winter Sunrise
I can’t give any reasons — gut reaction. In some cases they are abstracts/ impressionist work that I wish I knew how to get; in other cases they reflect the sharp, well-defined approach that I’m fairly obsessed with right now; sometimes it’s simply the subject matter, especially the Sandpiper and the Gulls (and I always have a weak spot for trees).
I chose my personal faves for 2012, and perversely, a beach abstract from Rhode Island that’s really my fave isn’t on the list. Why am I afraid to admit it’s my fave? (rhetorical Q) Here’s the link: http://nancydeflon.zenfolio.com/p727034372
Thanks for being a never-failing source of inspiration and encouragement.

Hi Bill,
The images are all outstanding as usual. However, I had one query- why did you use an ISO 800 in the winter moon rise over half dome image. Since I’m sure you would have definitely used a tripod. Why couldn’t a low ISO number be used. That said, this one is my personal favorite too !

These are all inspirational and wonderful photographs. It was difficult, but I decided to select only three:
#38 Winter Moonrise over Half Dome and Cloud’s Rest, Yosemite National Park, California 2012. It seems that I am there and I understand and relate to the wonders of the universe.
33. Oaks at sunrise, Ahwahnee, California 2012 Again, I can relate emotionally to this photograph. I love photographs and photographing trees, they seem to converse with me.
20. Yellow Maple Leaves, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California 2012 They are still hanging on and the beautiful contrast of the the yellow maple leaves with the dark branches is fascinating.
Thank you for sharing these with me.

All images are just terrific William.
The ones that really caught & kept my eye are: 1, 5, 6, 7, 16, 20, 25, 38
1. Sunrise… I love the simplicity, softness & color – so simple but I could stare at it all day long.
5. Redbud… The wire like branches of pink & occasional green are beautiful especially with the soft water background.
6. Lillies…The lilies are lovely, but their context even more interesting with the pockets of water on the leaves and the overall curve in the image!
7. Nautilus… I like this B&W so much better than the color. This is one of the best images of a nautilus that I have ever seen — the soft white goes so well with the gorgeous contours – just the right mood for a nautilus image!
16. Elderberries… such an interesting image with great balance in tone & composition -perfectly shot & processed! I find myself looking at every nook and cranny of these fabulous leaves!
20. Maple Leaves… I love the contrast with the black barren branches and then the delightful splashes of yellow – very pleasing to the eye!
25. Maple Leaves…This is my favorite of your abstracts here – just the right amount of movement blur to hold my eye. Lovely!
29. Oak Reflections… This is fabulous. I love everything about it and it has so much depth – more than the average reflection image – from the grass in the foreground to the back rock wall. The light is subtle but deliciously rich. Terrific!
38. Winter Moonrise… this is just classically wonderful. The hue in the sky, the mountains, the moon is so tangible I feel like I am looking into the night sky myself! This image transports me.
You had a fantastic year William!

All good photos William but here are my favorites:
#1 Sunrise, Santa Monica – I like the contrast of warm and cool and the complete abstraction of the image.
#4 Poppies and Lupine – I love the colors and the composition.
#5 Redbud, Merced River Canyon – Again a contrast, this one of sharp tree limbs with flowers against blurred water. Well composed.
#13 Rock Formations – Great rock pattern, well composed and cropped.
#16 Elderberry Leaves – Leaves on the ground can be cliché but his one is great because of the light and it is different, featuring brown leaves instead of the more usual brightly colored ones.
#20 Yellow Maple Leaves – By now you’ll get that I like contrast of warm against cool color and sharp against blur. I also like how the dark limbs connect the spare yellow leaves almost like insects caught in a spider web.
#26 Black Oaks – I think of this one as classic Wm. Neill. Good composition and I love the sun coming through the trees on the right.
Again, they are all good. Those are just some thoughts on the ones I like best and why.

This is a really varied and beautiful set of images, Bill. Being a fan of the intimate landscape, I really like 15 and 16, but I also like 3–it’s an excellent example of making order out of chaos, and the light was sure with you. Congratulations on a fantastic 2012; it was great to meet you last February at the Yosemite Renaissance reception–will you attend this year?
