I have just put together a collection of my favorite photographs from 2011. Usually, I edited this collection more tightly but I think it might be helpful to show the wide range of creative tangents I took this past year. To read more about my perspective on the importance of annual assessments, I suggest that you read my On Landscape column in Outdoor Photographer: Best Of The Year – An annual review of your images can point you in new directions of creativity
To see my collection of images from 2010, see My Favorite Images of 2010.
Please tell me which photographs of mine from 2011 are your favorites. It is always interesting to hear this feedback, so select your fav 3-5 images and tell me why you like them!
Thanks, and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.
Bill

Great blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a
paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely overwhelmed ..
Any tips? Bless you!

Hi, Bill…better late than never? You’ll notice that my five tend to be from the first half of the group. That’s because I’d used up my five well before I ran out of favorites! Wonderful work.
Winter Fog & Oaks
Calla Leaves ( I had to include a b&w, and I do like this one very much )
Foothills and Winter Storm
Plum Blossoms in Snow
Rock, Water and Tree, Cascade Falls
Man, so many I had to leave out!

I forgot to say why I like these images. The Late Summer Meadow image has a pleasant layering of yellow and crimson, the red rock image simply takes me back to Zion and its beauty, The Spring Oak image is what I see in a lot of California trees and you have captured it and the light very well. The Eroded Rock image just has subrle pleasing patterns that I like.

Hi, Bill:
I’m partial to oak trees, so I have to endorse Spring Oak, Coarsegold, California 2011
as my favorite image of yours from 2011. I found virtually all of last year’s work stirring and soulful, though.

Here are my favorites:
Late Summer Meadow, Ahwahnee, California 2011, the unnamed image right below Maple Leaf (the red rock and flowered trees that look like it was taken in Zion), Spring Oak, Coarsegold, California 2011 and Eroded Rock, Stud Horse Point, Arizona 2011. These are beautiful images!!

I love the Slot Canyon Sculpture image, it’s an image where many other similar images have been made I really see the proficiency of it was color managed. The color is vibrant but still very subtle as if I was really there.

I really like looking at the annual “Best Of” posts of other photographers, and also find the picks and comments by viewers very interesting. Here are five that I’d sure like to have hanging on my wall for daily inspiration:
– Winter Fog & Oaks, Coarsegold
– Foothills and Winter Storm, Table Mountain
– Pathway and Pear Blossoms, Coarsegold
– Morning Mist and Pines, Sierra Nevada Foothills
– Morning Fog and Oaks, Ahwanhnee

Great collection, Bill. These are the ones that made me stop and look closer:
Plum Blossoms and Snow…I love the red/pink colors in the snow.
Pond and Fog…I like how the branches in the foreground are crisp while the rest of the scene is dreamy in the fog.
Spring Oak…I am always drawn to tree trunk patterns myself.
Sunbeam on Waterfall…This is a special capture of a fleeting moment.
Maple Leaf…The simplicity of a single leaf reveals complex patterns and striking color.
Slot Canyon Sculpture…The patterns of light and dark led me farther into the scene.

Pine and Waterfall, Tioga Road, Yosemite National Park, California 2011
I like the contrast of motion and stability.
Flower Impressions, Pier 39, San Francisco, California 2011
What is the feeling of pink. I can’t quite find a word. I like the way it feels.
Eroded Rock, Stud Horse Point, Arizona 2011
I like the graphic elements and the motion they express.
Sandhill Cranes landing at sunset, Consumnes River Preserve, California 2011
I can tell the air is in motion and the birds are correcting for the landing. I can tell that they have feet down so they are near the landing. I can fell the motion that is occurring.
Rocks, Stud Horse Point, Arizona 2011
The rocks feel peaceful but lead my eye out to the column in the background.
Regards,
Larry

Calla Leaves, Buckeye & Oaks, Morning Mist & Pines, Dogwood Blossoms, and Sunbeam on Waterfall.
December 28, 2011 at 7:39 PM
My favorites are:
Buckeye, Foothills of the Sierra Nevada, California 2011
I’m fond of spring colors and I like the radiant pattern of the branches.
Rock, Water and Tree, Cascade Falls, Yosemite National Park, California 2011
This is a testament to the persistence of nature and I like the flow patterns in the water.
Late Summer Meadow, Ahwahnee, California 2011
The colors are appealing and the deep reddish tones of the middle band is broken nicely by a handful of larger blooms that echo the yellows in front of and behind the center band of flowers.
Eroded Rock, Stud Horse Point, Arizona 2011
I’m just fond of rock patterns and this is a good one.
December 28, 2011 at 7:34 PM
These are just exquisite images! I loved going through them all! Wonderful work William!
