Many years ago, when I was involved with Ansel Adam’s workshops, I was fortunate to hear lectures by many master photographers. One of them was Jerry Uelsmann, who became a friend and mentor. During his lectures, he would show his work from the past one year. Since his work involves compositing many images together, these images including variations he had tried, often with the same objects in different. The view was able to see some of the progression of Jerry’s creative process and always felt inspired when seeing his presentations. I’ve often thought I should do this myself each year, in order to assess my year’s efforts, but never got around to it.
With the advent of Facebook, Twitter, and blogs, it is easy to create a Best Of portfolio to share with friends and fellow photographers. Here is a collection of my images from 2009. I started the new year in India, so a few images are from there. Otherwise, I didn’t travel much so many images are ones made around my house, in nearby Yosemite and during a short trip to the Monterey coast.
Best wishes for the coming year,
Bill

Wonderful images! The simplicity – along wiht the exceptional execution is something to aspire to. I am struggling to narrow down images from 35 days of shooting in a single location (the Smokies). An entire year takes some real effort.
I’m curious – you have a large number of macro and close up images in this group. Was that by design for this year or a technique you chose to emphasize?

That’s just part of my style!

A fantastic and inspirational selection from the year William.
I love the misty trees with the long crop.
Thanks for showing the selection

Beautiful and inspiring work as always Bill. Your portfolio exemplifies how beauty can be found right outside your door as easily as half way around the world. I look forward to seeing what catches your eye in the year to come.

Bill –
Very nice series and a very nice post/representation of your work this year.
PS – my absolute favorite is the bull kelp image. I can feel the ocean breeze and cool water at my feet in this one!
