Yosemite: Sanctuary in Stone

I’m very excited to announce my next book Yosemite: Sanctuary in Stone. My first Yosemite book, Yosemite: The Promise of Wildness, was published in 1994 and went out of print recently. Now it is finally time to realize this project I dreamed of 20 years ago. Yosemite: Sanctuary in Stone is a personal collection of photographs reflecting 46 years of dedication to this wonderous landscape. Living here, photographing Yosemite and its vicinity, I have been working towards this dream for much of my lifetime.

I have written a new essay about my 46-year tenure living in or next to Yosemite and selected words from writers and photographers who have inspired me over the decades. My long-time friend, the exceptional photographer and essayist  Guy Tal has written an original essay for the book. I am so honored to have his contribution.

After working with many publishers for my previous books, this project will be self-published, a first for me and allowing me complete control. As in my past two books, the book design and reproduction quality will be of exceptional printing standards, much like William Neill – Photographer, a Retrospective, and Light on the Landscape. One feature of my book is the selection of quotes that add greatly to the impact of the book as a whole. I researched extensively to find words that complement my photographs and deepen my sanctuary theme by Ansel Adams, John Muir, Gary Snyder, David Robertson, Chiura Obata, Kim Stanley Robinson, Terry Tempest Williams, Philip Hyde, and Paul Caponigro. All of these writers and artists have inspired me over the decades. I’ve also included three original poems by Shelton Johnson, a long-time resident of the park ranger. Finally, I am honored that Guy Tal has written an original essay for the book entitled The Seduction of Certain Geographies. All of this is to say that Sanctuary is more than a collection of my photographs.
