{"id":2410,"date":"2011-11-04T13:17:36","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T20:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.williamneill.com\/blog\/?p=2410"},"modified":"2011-11-04T13:17:36","modified_gmt":"2011-11-04T20:17:36","slug":"river-of-light-virgin-river-in-the-narrows-zion-national-park-utah-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.williamneill.com\/index.php\/2011\/11\/river-of-light-virgin-river-in-the-narrows-zion-national-park-utah-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"River of Light, Virgin River in the Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah  2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2412\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2412\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2412\" title=\"201110_0866_HDR\" src=\"http:\/\/www.williamneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/201110_0866_HDR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"389\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III__EF16-35mm f\/2.8L II USM___ISO 100<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During my recent trip to Zion, I met up with my friend and former assistant <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnoconnorphoto.blogspot.com\/\">John O&#8217;Connor<\/a><\/span> to take a hike up the Narrows of the Virgin River. \u00a0We were so caught up with making images of all the wonderful reflections and other canyon details, we didn&#8217;t get very far, not even to the Orderville Canyon fork. \u00a0Oh well, next time! \u00a0Just when we decided to head back down river, I stopped dead in my tracks, in the middle of the river, when I saw these wonderful rapids and reflections. \u00a0This image was created with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.niksoftware.com\/hdrefexpro\/en\/entry.php\">Nik HDR Efex Pro<\/a><\/span>, using five exposures that were each one stop apart.<\/p>\n<p>This river hike reminds of many years ago when I hiked down the Paria River, not photographing much walking downstream. \u00a0When turning the opposite direction, I started seeing photographs everywhere! \u00a0By the time, I came out of the canyon, it was pitch dark. \u00a0It took me about half an hour to find the trailhead parking area. \u00a0The image below, made with my 4&#215;5 camera in 1985, became one of my first posters published in the late 1980s, and\u00a0one of my best-selling fine art prints sold throughout the country by The Nature Company.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2421\" style=\"width: 419px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2421\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2421 \" title=\"Reflections,-Paria-lg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.williamneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Reflections-Paria-lg1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamneill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Reflections-Paria-lg1.jpg 409w, https:\/\/blog.williamneill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Reflections-Paria-lg1-393x500.jpg 393w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reflections, Paria River, Paria Canyon\/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Area, Utah 1985<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Both photographs were made while standing in the cold rapids. \u00a0I used a longer exposure in the 1985 image, and so the reflections are smoothed over like a watercolor wash. \u00a0I cropped out the sunlit cliffs above each frame to avoid the extreme contrast and simplify the composition. \u00a0The results in both photos focus the viewer on the colors and textures in the river&#8217;s water.<\/p>\n<p>I have many more new images to polish up in post-processing, so stay tuned for more from my southwest trip.
